Ethiopia, Eritrea reopen borders
Ethiopia-Eritrea, Politics, 5/7/2002
A spokeswoman for the UN said on Monday that Ethiopia has reopened its borders with Eritrea after the UN peace keeping forces which was accused by the Ethiopian government of violating redeployment conditions, submitted an apology.
The spokeswoman Jell Cent said that the special envoy for the UN chief Kofi Annan for Ethiopia and Eritrea had submitted an apology to the Ethiopian government and he went by plane to Asmara as an indication to lifting the embargo imposed on aviation.
The spokeswoman added they were informed that the UN peace keeping forces resumed movement between the two countries' borders to start tasks.
Ethiopia has closed its border by the end of this April after it had accused the UN mission of transporting journalists and other personnel -- non members of the UN -- from Eritrea to Badmi town which falls under Ethiopia's administration, which Asmara calls for having control on.
Worthy mentioning that borders between the two countries are closed before the civilians except to UN staff and this is since the eruption of war between the two countries in 1998. Two years later a truce was signed and the two countries also accepted a plan drawn by the international committee which has the Hague as a headquarters to demarcate new borders between them.
