UN Security Council required to follow up on Israel's war crimes, Baz
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 5/6/2002

Egyptian Presidential Political Advisor Osama El Baz said that lifting the siege off Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat is not a very big step, saying the United Nations is required to follow up on the Israeli war crimes against the Palestinians, and its abidance by its obligations to United Nations resolutions.

In an interview with TV program "Good Morning Egypt," Baz said that such a step was required among others including ending the blockade of the Palestinian towns. He said that the issue is not lifting the siege off Arafat only but also off the Palestinian people.

He called on the international community to shoulder its responsibilities as regards the Israeli crimes committed against the Palestinian civilians.

Also, Abdul Aziz bin Nasser Al Shamsi, the United Arab Emirates' permanent representative at the United Nations said "The international media reports and the testimony of international officials on the systematic killings and destruction committed by the Israeli occupying forces against the refugees of Jenin camp cannot be definitely doubted or justified, especially after all evidences and information clearly shows Israeli perpetration of war crimes in Jenin," Gulf News reported yesterday.

Egypt's Presidential Advisor Osama El Baz said that the "Jennin massacre committed by the Israeli troops will not go (away) just like that," adding that the UN Security Council is required to follow up the issue of Israel's refusal to receive a fact-finding committee that it formed and adopt a binding resolution to compel Israel to approve to cooperate with it.

Meantime, the USA spoke regarding international law obligations it had helped impose against Libya. The US State Department said Friday "Our longstanding position is that Libya must comply with all of the UN Security Council resolutions. These include payment of compensation, as well as acceptance of responsibility. Our policy has not changed." The United States representative added "There is no shortcut to this. They must comply with UN resolutions."
