SC turned its back on Annan over fact-finding mission
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 5/4/2002

Egypt's permanent delegate to the UN ambassador Ahmed Abul Gheit criticized the lax UN Security Council's stance over the fact-finding team which UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan announced to have dissolved Thursday.

Commenting on the resolution, Abul Gheit said that "Annan -was left alone facing Israel's maneuvers and ploy that the Security Council did not bat an eyelid over the past couple of weeks to stretch a helping hand to the Secretary General and confront with him Israel's disregard to the international legitimacy.

He noted that Annan has sent a message to the Security Council on Wednesday in which he expressed an intention to dissolve the fact-finding team due to Israel's maneuvers and attempts to play for time in order to avoid cooperating with the UN.

Annan expected that as soon as the Security Council receives this message, it will express a firm stance in the face of Israel and urging it to immediately cooperate with the team but the Council wasted the chance and succumbed to Israel's acts , added Abul Gheit.
