Morocco ready to continue efforts for fair peace in mideast
Morocco-USA, Politics, 5/4/2002

Morocco's King Mohammed VI on Friday renewed Morocco's readiness to continue contributing to the efforts geared towards establishment of a fair and lasting peace between Palestinians and Israelis.

The king made the statement while receiving in New York Mortimer P. Zuckerman, President of the Conference of Presidents of the Major American Jewish Organizations.

King Mohammed VI renewed Morocco's permanent values of tolerance, dialogue and overture.

This is not a "juncture choice," he said, adding Morocco's memory and tradition has kept through history what Muslims and Jews built together at the levels of heritage and culture.

This a wealth that Morocco claims and that makes our difference and our power, the king said, before stressing the Kingdom's readiness to continue contributing to the efforts geared towards establishment of a fair and lasting peace between Palestinians and Israelis.

Touching on the rise of extremism in the world, King Mohammed VI asked his interlocuters to be mobilized and help the American opinion better understand the Arab-Muslim world at religious, cultural and social realms.

The Jewish organizations in the USA, King Mohammed VI said, should be more active and more acting to avert any mixing between Islam and terrorism and to help ensure a greater respect of the values of Islam and of the Muslims' social and cultural heritage.

King Mohammed VI invited Zuckerman to visit Morocco with the other members of the executive bureau of the conference of Presidents of the Major American Jewish Organizations.

During the audience, Zuckerman paid tribute to Morocco for its "unique" role to give the Middle East peace process all its chance to succeed in such a way taking into account the legitimate aspirations of Palestinians and Israelis to live side by side in security, mutual respect and a better-shared dignity.

Zuckerman, who was accompanied by Malcolm Hoenlein, executive director of the Conference of Presidents, also highlighted the exemplary rank Morocco holds in the dialogue between cultures, religions and civilizations. He stressed, in this connection, the power and specificity of the cohabitation and relations between Muslims and Jews in Morocco.

"This is the message of Morocco that all the world need today more than ever," said Zuckerman, appealing to King Mohammed VI to continue his efforts to help reconciliation and peace and combat all sorts of extremism regardless of their source.

Andre Azoulay, Advisor to King Mohammed VI, Rochdi Chraibi, Head of the Royal Office, Fadel Benyaich, Charge de Mission at the Royal Office, Serge Berdugo, secretary general of Morocco's Jewish Communities and Robert Assaraf, president of the world union of Moroccan Judaism, attended the Royal audience.
