Sanitation sector in Morocco needs about $87 bln over 5 coming years, study
Morocco, Economics, 5/4/2002

The sector of sanitation in Morocco needs an investment worth 100 billion Dirhams (about US$ 87 billion) over the coming five years, a study revealed.

The study, conducted by the Multidisciplinary Study and Research Center (IMER) showed that only five water treatment stations out of the fifty existing ones in Morocco are in order, because of the "delay and anarchy" that characterizes most of the construction works.

The 311 Moroccan cities and urban centers are short of expectations as to solid and liquid waste management, only 60% of the garbage is collected, most of the time in "unsatisfactory" conditions, no garbage dump is controlled, and there is no waste recycling factories at all, the Institute goes on.

IMER deems investments in sanitation insufficient at a time they are most needed, as poor sanitation affects the population's health, natural resources and productivity.

The Multidisciplinary Study and Research Center will hold in Casablanca next Thursday a seminar on "Solid and liquid sanitation: the role of local collectivities."

The IMER, a non governmental organization, seeks to encourage social, economic, medical, cultural, technologic and environmental studies.
