$ 2 billion, the needs of the Palestinians after the invasion
Palestine-Israel, Economics, 5/4/2002
The commissioner general of the Palestinian Refugees Relief and Work Agency UNRWA Peter Hansen said on Thursday that the needs of the Palestinians in the coming phase is estimated at USD 2 billion after estimates were USD 117 million at the beginning of this year.
Hansen attributed the great increase in the demanded sum to the destruction operation carried out by the Israeli occupation forces which caused "more destruction than an earthquake," Hansen said.
Hansen indicated that UNRWA only owns of this sum USD 47 million, commending Saudi Arabia, where he is currently visiting, for providing USD 9 million as an annual aid to UNRWA.
Meantime, UNRWA's regional official Richard Cook said that the rebuilding of Jenin Camp alone will require USD 20 to 30 million, noting that the main problem there lies in the non- exploded ordnance left by the Israeli army in the camp. A matter which threatens the life of citizens.
Cook expected to find new corpses under the remains which they are working to remove starting from the center of the camp which was completely destroyed.
