Moroccan elderly inmate in Italy wants to be operated on at home
Morocco, Culture, 5/3/2002
A 78-year-old Moroccan, jailed in Italy for murder, has refused to be operated on Italy, preferring to undergo the emergency surgery at home.
The inmate, whose health is in critical state, has an advanced-stage tumor, his lawyer told the press. The old detainee says he does not trust the Italian surgeons and wish to be operated in Morocco, the lawyer said.
The inmate's case is not covered by extradition accords between Morocco and Italy, the lawyer said, adding the inmate, whose identity was not disclosed, still has four years to spend in jail.
The Moroccan consulate in Perouse asked the jail authorities for permission to convince the inmate be operated on in Italy.
