Bin Ali committed to pluralism, democracy

The Tunisian President Zein al-Abidin Bin Ali has stressed in a speech he delivered on the occasion of the May Day his cling to strengthening Pluralism and democracy in the country.
He also renewed his assertion that Tunisia "was and will continue to be beside the causes of justice and the rights in the world, foremost being the Palestinian question."
On Wednesday ( May first) Bin Ali got the Mediterranean prize for human rights for the year 2001 granted to him by the Italian human rights league, the two Spanish league and the Italian Parliamentary institute for researches and studies during his meeting with the secretary general of the Italian league for human rights Gheitana Bashi, currently visiting Tunisia.
Bin Ali announced his decision to keep the donation door open for one voluntary work day ( May 15), stressing that Tunisia will strongly be always a supporter to the militant Palestinian people to restore back their rights and independent state with Jerusalem as a capital and for the struggle of the Palestinians under the leadership of Yasser Arafat.
Bin Ali expressed his thanks to workers, peasants and traders and their organizations for their support to the fundamental reforms in the constitution which furnishes for the "republic of tomorrow." Bin Ali added "As our celebration of the May Day coincides with the launching of a new tour of social negotiations we have to realize the delicate phase our national economy is passing because of international conditions and special climatic conditions. Despite the continued drought for four continuous years and the recession of growth rate in the world and the escalation of its grave consequences following the incidents of September 11 on several sectors especially the sector of tourism and transport, our country was able to preserve its balances, and credibility in world markets, at acceptable rates. This, however, makes it imperative for us to continue hard efforts, so as to ensure our developmental march and Tunisia to be, thanks to the collective efforts of its people in the procession of the developing countries."
