Czech republic deny transporting weapons to Iraq
Iraq-Czech Republic, Politics, 5/2/2002
The Czech foreign ministry denied news which claimed that Czech weapons were transported to Iraq.
The British publication The Guardian published recently a report of an interview it did in Europe with three defectors from the Iraqi army and that "According to their accounts, together with research" done undercover by fellow dissidents working undercover inside Iraq, the defectors claim that Czech weopons were smuggled to Iraq this year.
To this effect, the press spokesman for the ministry said in statements issued on Wednesday in Prague that what was published in this regard were mere groundless claims.
The Czech ministry of commerce and industry, the side responsible for offering arms exports licensing for abroad, said it did not give any licenses for exporting Czech weapons this year or last year in the direction indicated by the published report.
On the other hand, the Czech minister of defense said there are no available information concerning the published news. He added he asked the specialized security department to investigate the sources of these information and to unmask the implications of publishing it.
