Retirement and the new generation in Syria
Syria, Politics, 5/2/2002
Well-informed sources in Syria told the Kuwaiti daily al-Rai al-Am that the government has determined to implement the decision taken by the prime minister Muhammad Mustafa Miro he had released by the beginning of February that states to quit all persons reaching the age of 60 so as to open the door before a new generation of administrative leaderships.
In line with the same decision, Muhammad Ruqyya was appointed on Tuesday as the chairman for the remote- sensing establishment in succession of Hussein Ibrahim who was quitted because he reached the age of retirement. The sources said that it is expected that changes until the end of the current week will target three or four director generals from the ministries of health and the economy and to be followed later by changes in other ministries.
The sources expected that the decision of the Syrian prime minister to be valid on all governmental sides with very limited exceptions in certain administrations of artistic characteristics, noting that the rate of change might reach until the end of this year 25% of almost 300 central directors.
During the few past weeks several workers in different sectors including the official media tried to exclude themselves from the decision to be retired, however these efforts were doomed to failure and the government persisted in its decision to change because most of the "bad administrative performance" is because of the mentality controlling such performance.
According to official statistics those who are less than 35 year old constitute more than 70% of the Syrian population which tolled 19 million and that a large part of university graduates are unemployed.
