ALECSO backs Palestinian cultural institutions
Palestine-Regional, Culture, 5/1/2002
The executive council of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and scientific Organization (ALECSO) adopted a series of measures meant to back Palestinian institutions operating in the realm of education, science and culture.
The council, which held its 75th session in Rabat, convened to set up a special fund for the reconstruction of cultural buildings and rehabilitation of historical sites in Palestine and called for the summoning of an Arab conference to adopt An Arab Declaration on the Palestinian People's Cultural Rights.
The council also decided to donate part of the 2001-2002 budget to Palestinian institutions to help them cope with emergency needs and maintain their activities. It called for an increase in the US$ 17 million worth budget for 2003-2004 of the funds destined to these institutions and urged Arab and international organizations to coordinate efforts in backing the Palestinian people and helping the Palestinian authority reconstruct the educational and cultural institutions destroyed by the Israeli army.
The council decided to hold the soonest possible a photo exhibition on the Islamic heritage of the holy city of AL-Quds and to work out a program for the preservation of Palestinian manuscripts.
The council adopted several other recommendations related to the organization's budget and activities and to the functioning of bodies stemming from ALECSO.
The ALECSO executive council will hold its 76th session in Tunisia next December.
On the sidelines of the council's meeting in Rabat, ALECSO awarded King Mohammed VI its emblem in recognition of the sovereign's role in promoting Arab-Islamic culture.
The Emblem was handed Monday to Prince Moulay Rachid, the sovereign's younger brother, by ALECSO Director General, Mounji Bousnina.
The ALECSO emblem is awarded to the Arab leaders who endeavor for the development of Arab-Islamic culture and who support the organization.
