Syrian mediation between Kuwait, Iraq
Syria-Kuwait, Politics, 5/1/2002
The London- based al-Hayat daily Tuesday quoted diplomatic sources in Damascus as saying that Syria is conveying messages between Baghdad and Kuwait with the aim to restore back confidence between the two sides and Iraq's implementation of what was agreed upon at the recent Arab summit in Beirut.
The paper explained quoting the same sources that the Kuwaiti foreign minister Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah sent last week a written message to his Syrian peer Farouk al-Shara including the Kuwaiti demands from Iraq and that the Syrian deputy foreign minister Suleiman Haddad conveyed the content of the message to the Iraqi foreign minister who stopped in Damascus in his way to Moscow.
The paper reported that the message of the Kuwaiti foreign minister included thanks to Syria for its role to reaching a common formula between Kuwait and Iraq at the Beirut Arab summit especially the Iraqi conformations to honor Kuwait's independence, sovereignty and security and ensuring its territorial integrity.
The paper said that the Kuwaiti foreign minister called on the Syrian side to play a role in order to translate that into certain and tangible steps concerning certain issues including Baghdad's resumption of its participation in the meetings of the tripartite committee on the Kuwaiti missing and prisoners and to stop pursuing or launching media campaigns violating Kuwait's security, sovereignty and independence.
