Mubarak-Zayed summit tackles deteriorating Mideast situation
United Arab Emirates-Egypt, Politics, 5/1/2002
Tuesday's summit meeting in Abu Dhabi between Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and UAE President Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan al-Nahyan tackled the deteriorating situation in the Palestinian lands, Egyptian Information Minister Safwat el-Sherif said late Tuesday.
In statements following the summit, Sherif added that talks came as a part of regional and international contacts held by President Mubarak with a number of heads of state and government.
The talks also dwelt on the outcome of Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah Bin Abdel Aziz's visit to the US, he said.
The Mubarak-Zayed talks addressed also the ongoing negotiations with Palestinian President Yasser Arafat as regards lifting the siege of his residence in Ramallah, he added.
Both leaders highlighted the importance of Israel's implementation of international legitimacy resolutions, Sherif said.
"President Mubarak and Sheikh Zayed pored over the best means of activating efforts on combating Israel's State terrorism against Palestinian civilians," he added.
They asserted the necessity of calling on the international community to shoulder its responsibility towards rehabilitating the Palestinian infrastructure, Sherif said.
Within this context, both leaders reaffirmed their full support of Arafat as the legitimate Palestinian leader, he added.
They highlighted the importance of joint Arab action that would serve the best of Arab interests, he said.
They also highlighted the necessity to begin a collective media action at the political, economic and information levels.
During their extended meeting, which was attended by delegations of both countries, Mubarak and Zayed stressed they would further seek to strengthen bilateral relations in the various political, economic, social, investment and information domains, Sherif concluded.
