Mubarak criticizes the US strongly
Egypt-USA, Politics, 5/1/2002
Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak on Tuesday accused Washington of using the its so-called international campaign to fight terrorism for the interests of Israel and to brake promises to ensure a political settlement for the Arab- Israeli conflict.
Mubarak said in a speech he delivered on Tuesday on the occasion of the May Day that Israel "has exceeded all boundaries by its inhuman practices aiming at terrifying the Palestinian people and oppressing their resistance of the Israeli occupation." Mubarak said that these "practices constituted a flagrant violation to Israel's international obligations concerning the Fourth Geneva agreement in particular and to human rights in general and also to all the agreements it has signed with the Palestinian authority by regional and international guarantees."
Mubarak continued that the campaign against terrorism "has taken a new trend aiming at achieving political gains for Israel at the expense of the Arab and Islamic states and the use of this campaign in the attempt to eliminate the legitimate Palestinian resistance of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories besides strengthening the Israeli position which rejects joining direct political negotiations."
Mubarak called for immediate halting of "the fierce campaign launched by Israel against the Palestinian people and their leadership," considering that this campaign has no logic and can not be compared to the war launched by the US against terrorism in Afghanistan. President Mubarak also called on the major powers especially the US to shoulder their responsibilities to immediately halt all the Israeli practices and Israel's honoring of the Palestinian authority which is democratically elected and to immediately withdraw from the occupied Palestinian territories in the framework of immediate implementation of the international resolutions."
