Egypt-Palestine, Culture, 4/30/2002

Egypt's First Lady Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak yesterday led a popular march from AL Irish to Rafah in support for the Palestinians.

The march was organized as part of efforts to offer assistance to the war-battered Palestinians in the occupied territories.

The marchers included members of the Egyptian Red Crescent society and the national council for women as well as several ministers and prominent figures.

Also among the marchers, were Palestinian ambassador to Egypt Zohdi Al-kodra, Secretary General of the Palestinian Red Crescent society Mohamed Zaghloul, Palestinian Health Minster Riyadh Al-Zanoun, Palestinian Supplies Minister Abdel Aziz Shahin, Palestinian Social Affairs Minister Entesar Al-Wazir besides a number of other Senior Palestinian officials.

The aim from staging this popular march was to meet with representatives of the Palestinian Authority at Rafah checkpoint to deliver to them humanitarian supplies of food, medicines and ambulances to be distributed in the Palestinian self-rule areas.

Mrs. Mubarak, the Chairwoman of the Egyptian Red Crescent, directed a speech to the courageous Palestinian people and the steadfast Palestinian women greeting them for the sacrifices they offer to restore their freedom ad protect their dignity.

"From our stand here at the final point of our joint borders we carry to you the feelings of true brotherhood and complete solidarity at this very hard stage of your life to assert to you that we live your struggle moment by moment and share with you the same hopes to realize a just and comprehensive peace," she said.

Mrs. Mubarak particularly greeted the Palestinian women and the heroic role she is playing as a mother, sister and wife in face of the toughest circumstances and the most trying challenges.

"As we offer this assistance from the Egyptian Red Crescent to its Palestinian counterpart we look forward to the outset of a new dawn when peace prevails in the land of peace, the land which embraced all heavenly religions and which was blessed by all prophets," she added.

She said that the march she led was staged with the aim to manifest the strength of ties binding together the people of Egypt and Palestine and to express the Egyptian people's feeling of the Palestinians' pains and their wish to stop the bloodletting in the Holy lands.

Ending her speech, the Egyptian first lady prayed to God to help the Palestinians in their present hardship and to restore peace to the troubled area voicing hope that her next meeting with Palestinians would be on free Palestinian lands and in an independent state of Palestine.

The Palestinian Health Minister addressed the marchers thanking Mrs. Mubarak and all the Egyptian people for their support to the Palestinians and the Palestinian Intifada.

He said that he is conveying to the Egyptians and to their great leader President Mubarak the greetings of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat for their continued support and never-stopping assistance all through the past decades.

The Egyptian assistance includes 23 trucks carrying six tones of medicines and 300 tones of rice, sugar and flour.

The marchers raised banners expressing their support of the Palestinians in their struggle against Israeli occupation.

"We demand a respect to international charters", "together for just peace", "inhuman practices are violation of international charters", "a message of solidarity of Palestinians' right to decent life," and "lift restrictions on Palestinian organizations", the banners read.

Palestinian Minister of Social Affairs Intessar Al-wazeer Monday praised the fund-raising campaign carried out by the Egyptian Red Crescent under the auspices of Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak to offer urgent relief aid to the Palestinian people.

The campaign represents the continuous support of the Egyptian people for the Palestinians and expresses solidarity and sympathy with the war-torn Palestinian people, she said.

As for the conditions of the Palestinian people, the minister said they are endeavoring to rebuild what Israeli war machine destroyed.

Minister of information and member of the board of directors of the Egyptian Red Crescent said that humanitarian aid convoy led by Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, chairperson of the crescent yesterday to Rafah port, is a civilized message to the world from the land of Sinai, which was liberated with the blood of Egyptians.
