10,000 candidates compete for the Algerian council

A source at the Algerian ministry of the interior has stated that the number of lists eligible to take part in the legislative elections to be held on May 30 reached 1004 lists including 10741 candidates and that 964 lists will take part in the elections at the level of 48 provinces while 40 lists represent the 6 circles relating to the Algerian community abroad.

The participating Algerian parties numbering 23 provided 829 lists of which 175 lists for independent candidates.

Preparations are made to start the election campaigns on May 5th and it will last for three weeks during which the candidates will present to the people, their programs through festivals, rallies and media campaigns.

The events of the polling process and preparations will be supervised by a higher political committee appointed by the Algerian President Abdul Aziz Butaflika last week. It is headed by al-Saeed Bu al-Shaeer, former chairman of the constitutional council. All parties taking part in the election competition are represented in this committee.
