Al-Shara: US bias to Israel damages its credibility
Syria-Regional, Politics, 4/30/2002
The Syrian deputy premier and foreign minister Farouk al-Shara has announced that there is no alternative for the Palestinian Intifada and resistance only by ending the Israeli occupation of all usurped Arab lands of 1967, and investigation of the crimes committed by Israel against the Palestinians as from Deir Yassin massacre until Jenin massacre in 2002. This was expressed by al-Shara' in Syria's speech at the ministerial meeting of the non-aligned movement currently held in Durban, South Africa.
Al-Shara questioned that "if the Palestinians were not able to restore back their usurped rights and lands through Oslo agreements which Israel did not honor and the ME peace process cosponsors have not succeeded through more than 10 years of convincing Israel to approve the implementation of an American plan based on UN Security Council resolutions 242 and 338 and the 'land for peace' formula; the UN Security Council is not able to use chapter no 7th to implement these resolutions or halt the building of the Israeli settlements in the occupied Arab territories because of the US veto and if the recent Arab peace initiative approved by the recent Arab Beirut's summit as the last choice for peace was immediately met by Israeli in brutal bombardment and crimes against humanity, then is there any other choice to end the Israeli occupation rather the Intifada and resistance?"
On the other hand and on the sideline of the conference, President of South Africa Thabu Mabiki met with al-Shara and discussions dealt with latest regional and international developments and other several issues of mutual concern.
Al-Shara also met with the Malaysian foreign minister Hameed al-Bar and discussions dealt with conditions in the Middle East and the next summit of the non aligned movement which will be held next spring in Malaysia. The Malaysian president thanked Syria for its support to choosing his country for hosing the next summit of the non aligned movement (NAM). The two ministers stressed consolidation of bilateral relations between Syria and Malaysia.
Al-Shara also met the Iraqi minister of higher education Humam Abdul Khaleq, who is the chairman of the Iraqi delegation to the NAM ministerial conference and discussions during the meeting dealt with latest developments in the region, issues debated on the conference's agenda and the importance of coordination among the Arab states within NAM in order to strengthen the role played by the movement in confrontation of current challenges.
Al-Shara also met with Fernando Ramiz, the first deputy for the Cuban foreign minister and the chairman of the Cuban delegation to the conference. Discussions dealt with works of Durban conference and friendship of cooperation and cooperation between Syria and Cuba. View points were identical regarding revitalizing the role of the none aligned movement in a "one pole world" and strengthening solidarity among NAM's member states to serve its set objectives and principles.
