Al- Turabi party criticizes constitutional amendments on president
Sudan, Politics, 4/30/2002

The People's Congress party which is led by Hassan al-Turabi has strongly criticized the constitutional amendments permitted by the Shoura council of the ruling National Congress party especially those pertinent to the President of the Republic and his authority to appoint the Cabinet ministers and the Wali (governors).

In a statement issued on Monday by the Sudanese daily al-Ayam, the People's Congress conference described these amendments as a frustration for the hopes of the people and a perpetuation to the authority of "the individual" and also of depriving the people from their unwavering rights in the constitution.

The statement said that these constitutional amendments which were approved by the National Congress last Friday regarding the extension of the term of office set for the president are to for the purpose of reelecting the president.
