Jenin ordeal more like earthquake
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 4/29/2002
"Jenin refugee camp has become a symbol of Israeli violations of Palestinian rights. The destruction which I saw with my own eyes cannot have been man-made as it seemed more like the aftermath of an earthquake," Secretary-General of Amnesty International (AI), Irene Khan said yesterday.
Ms Khan led an AI delegation on a visit of the camp, where she met with families who were victims of Israeli aggression.
According to MENA, the afflicted families told her of their ordeal and of how they saw their sons executed before their eyes.
Ms Khan also heard accounts of Israeli occupation forces, who violently stormed into the camp and demolished homes on their owners' heads.
The Secretary General of the Palestinian cabinet, Ahmed Abdel Rahman, said the Israelis should wake up from the illusion that using their arsenal was sufficient to quell the Palestinian resistance.
He told Sout el-Arab radio service from Ramallah that recent demonstrations in the West Bank sent a message to Israel that resistance would continue as long as occupation continued.
He also urged all Palestinian to be wary of the Israeli attempt to pit resistance groups against against each other, adding that national unity was a top priority at this stage.
