An American military strategy to topple Saddam
Iraq-USA, Politics, 4/29/2002

The New York Times spoke of a US military strategy to change the ruling system in Iraq.

The New York Times said on Sunday "The Bush administration, in developing a potential approach for toppling President Saddam Hussein of Iraq, is concentrating its attention on a major air campaign and ground invasion, with initial estimates contemplating the use of 70,000 to 250,000 troops."

The New York Times explained that the administration of the US President George Bush is drawing the details of a military act against Iraq, but it is convinced that a local attack, made by opposition forces in the North and South of Iraq will not succceed in changing the regime.

The New York Times quoted high ranking American officials as saying that the attack against Iraq will not be launched before the beginning of 2002 and this is to ensure optimum and good diplomatic, economic and military conditions.

The American forces are expected to use bases in Turkey and Kuwait while Qatar will replace the air operations center in Saudi Arabia.

The New York Times indicated contradictory views concerning this plan. It said the US Vice President Dick Cheney, the defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld and their senior aides see that the Arab leaders will openly protest but will in secret celebrate the collapse of Saddam Hussein. While the other side's view which is supported at the State Department and among the working staff of the White House say that the Arabs will view the efforts of foiling the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein as a confrontation with Islam. A mater which destabilize the Middle East region as a whole and complicates the wider campaign against Osama Bin Laden and al-Qaida networking.

Worthy mentioning that since years the American policy has stated to work for a change in the Iraqi regime under the pretext of preventing the use of mass destruction weapons by Baghdad. However, such statements raised concern in several European and Arab states, alike.
