Agreement on Arab Women Organization ratified
Regional, Culture, 4/27/2002

The Arab states have started the signing procedures of the agreement setting up the Arab Women Organization.

The agreement will be enacted when approval procedures are completed by at least seven Arab states.

The organization, to be based in Cairo, will work for the promotion of Arab women's condition and ensure their participation in economic and social activities, in compliance with the decisions of the Arab First Ladies Summit, held here in 2000.

The United Arab Emirates signed the agreement becoming the first Arab state to do so. Emirate's First Lady Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak al-Nahyan is a strong promoter of Arab women's rights.

The Arab League economic and social council and the Arab Summit held last year in Amman approved the decision to create an Arab Women Organization.
