Khartoum gives Ethiopia an outlet on the Red Sea
Sudan-Ethiopia, Politics, 4/26/2002
Both Ethiopia and Sudan, former enemies, have agreed to foster their relations and to give Ethiopia, which has no sea outlets, facilities to use the "Port Sudan" on the red Sea for its trade with the outer world.
A high ranking Sudanese delegation, chaired by the first deputy for the President Ali Othman Taha has concluded an official visit to Ethiopia that lasted for four days on Thursday.
Among the signed agreement is the amendment of an agreement on land transport signed three years ago relating to renovating one of the important highways. This highway extends from the south East of the Sudanese city of al-Qadarif which is penetrated by the railway line and then to the two border cities of Qalabbat ( Sudan) to Matma ( Ethiopia ).
Eritrea had angered Ethiopia by imposing conditions on it in order to permit its trade to pass through Asama port and for that Ethiopia sought to find another alternative as a sea outlet. Relations between Ethiopia and Sudan reached a low situation by the end of the 1990 when the two countries exchanged accusations over supporting rebel groups.
Worthy mentioning that both Sudan and Ethiopia are members in the Nile basin states organization which has been working since more than 10 years on confidence- building measures throughout a series of conferences over fair partition on the Nile waters.
