Saud al-Faisal abstains from condemning martyrdom operations
Saudi Arabia-Palestine, Politics, 4/26/2002
The Saudi foreign minister Prince Saud al-Faisal abstained in statements issued on Thursday from condemning the "Martyrdom operations" against Israel as requested by Washington, considering that the way to peace in the Middle East passes through Israel's withdrawal from the occupied Palestinian territories and lifting the siege imposed on the chairman of the Palestinian authority Yasser Arafat.
Prince Saud al-Faisal said in a statement to the London- based al-Hayat daily on the "martyrdom operations" that "nobody prefers killing innocents from this side or that side." He added "How can one condemn someone who lost the hope in life because of insults and conditions imposed on him by an occupation force?"
A-Faisal added that there is a difference between a terrorist act like that which took place on September 11 in the US and a "martyrdom act carried out by a young woman or man where means of life blocked before him or her." He continued "There is one side which is to fight terrorism, condemn it and work to eliminate it from the world." He added that the reasons behind these acts need to be understood.
