Moroccan red crescent takes part in conference on humanitarian law in Almeria
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 4/25/2002
Vice-president of the Moroccan Red Crescent (CRM), Mehdi Bennouna, participated April 18-20 in a conference on International Humanitarian Law, held by the Spanish Red Crescent in Almeria.
Bennouna lauded the Spanish Red Crescent's position against racism and its "courageous" attitude during El Ejido events in 2OOO, when racist acts were perpetrated against Moroccan expatriates.
He said expatriates are victim of injustice in their native country, of clandestine criminal networks, and of acts of racism in the hosting country. He recalled that Amnesty International issued a report on April 15 denouncing the violence and torture committed by the Spanish police and civil guards against Moroccan immigrants.
In its report entitled "Spain(.) Torture and racist treatment by the state representatives," Amnesty International emphasized that the number of racist acts and tortures against minorities rose between 1995 and 2000.
