Kuwaitis call on Saudi Arabia to release detainees of Intifada demonstrations
Kuwait-Saudi Arabia, Politics, 4/23/2002
Al-Salafeyah (The Predecessors) movement in Kuwait has called on the Saudi authorities to release demonstrators who support the Palestinians in order to avoid "undermining the unity of the Islamic line."
The movement urged on the Saudi government "to start releasing them and then to take reservation measures on them by the security authorities during the people's demonstrations which took place in the Kingdom."
In a statement, the movement in particular gave mention to the chairman of the Saudi people's committee in support of Palestine Sheikh Abdul Hameed Al Mubarak who called on April 4th for demonstrations before the American consulate in al-Dhahran.
The Saudi authorities prevented the demonstrations and arrested several persons including Sheikh Abdul Hameed al-Mubarak.
The movement considered that "continued detention for those who took part in the marches sympathizing with the Palestinian people violate the Islamic unity line and please the enemies of the ( Islamic ) nation of Jews and their collaborators." The movement expressed hope that Saudi Arabia will start releasing the detainees, noting that their release will unify the ranks of the nation in this dark phase of its history.
The statement described Saudi Arabia as "the steadfast castle of Islam." Sources in the movement said that it does not know precisely the number of persons who were arrested following the massive marches organized in the Kingdom.
