Comoros, Politics, 4/22/2002

The Presidential elections in the Greater Comoros islands, due yesterday morning, were postponed.

News reports said that the voting centers were not opened on Sunday morning as was decided.

One of the candidates for the elections, Kamal al-Zamaan confirmed the postponement of the elections which was announced by the national radio of the Comoros island, saying that the postponement came after the independent election national committee found itself unable to ratify and declare the results of the elections held on April 14.

Worthy mentioning that the election committee was due to have met on Sunday in Anjoine island in order to ratify the results of the presidential elections in the Comoros islands federation or to cancel these elections.

The President of Comoros colonel Othman Ghazali announced he is the winner but the other candidates who competed with him in the elections stressed that violations occurred in the voting operations.
