Kidney ablation through four 5-10mm holes
Morocco, Health, 4/19/2002
A surgical team of Ibn Tofail hospital in Marrakesh successfully performed a coelioscopic nephrostomy, consisting of the ablation of a diseased kidney through four holes, only five to ten millimeters wide.
The modern surgery, first of its kind in Morocco, was performed by an entirely-Moroccan team of professors.
The operation was carried out in good conditions, and free of risks for a 55-year-old patient who left the hospital two days later, professor Nouri told MAP.
The surgeon said the patient had a vesicle lethiasis and a decaying right kidney, and that the team opted for this technique like in developed countries instead of a traditional incision where the patient has to stay in hospital eight days at least.
The first surgery of this kind was performed in the United States in the nineties, and took eight hours, he said, underlining that the one made in Ibn Tofail only took 2h15.
Nouri, who got acquainted to this kind of operations in France and the United States, qualified the use of coelioscopy in urology as a "cutting-edge technique."
