UNESCO reveals Israeli crimes against Palestinian antiquities
Palestine-Israel, Military, 4/18/2002

The Executive Committee of UNESCO International Heritage Center approved referring the draft resolution of condemning Israeli forces aggressions against historic and archeological locations in the Palestinian town to the general conference due to be held in Budapest in June next year.

The move is meant to subject the resolution to the conference voting, according to an Egyptian request.

Minister of Culture Farouk Hosni said in a statement that the resolution deems the Israeli crimes as against the human heritage on equal footing to similar stances adopted by UNESCO against Taleban movement in Afghanistan statues when it destroyed Buddha statues.

Zahi Hawas the Secretary of the Higher Council for Antiquity said the resolution was formulated by Egypt, Greece, Hungary and South Africa that are represented in UNESCO executive committee.

They demanded that a Fact-Finding mission be formed to probe the damages and possibility of renovation and maintenance of the Palestinian antiquities.
