Launching fire near Rmeish
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 4/18/2002

A fire sound was heard to the south of the southern Lebanese Rmeish town at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, near the southern Lebanese borders. This sound was followed by flying of the Israeli helicopters and focusing lights at the woods of Rmeish followed by Israeli artillery bombardment mopping up operation, while UNIFIL ran on foot patrols in the region.

The Lebanese defense minister Khalil al-Hrawi accused Israel of violating the "blue line" twice on Wednesday evening at Rmeish woods, while the Israeli army radio said that a military armored vehicle was exposed to a fire near "Cupetos" but did not result in casualties and was not accompanied by sneaking operations through the borders and thus the Israeli army mopped up the area.

Minister al-Hrawi said that the "Israeli provocation came at a time in which the US secretary of state Collin Powell conveyed the interest and care of the US President to maintain calm on the blue line in order to avoid any escalation." He indicated that the Lebanese security forces exert all efforts to preserve calm and prevent any violation to the blue line noting the Lebanese state honoring of its obligations."
