Arafat and the Israeli peace conference
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 4/18/2002
The spokesman for the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon said that Israel will permit the chairman of the Palestinian authority Yasser Arafat to attend the peace conference under the auspices of the US if he can prove "actual commitment to peace."
The spokesman Ranaan Ghesin said that the matter is not linked to personalities and that the US will circulate invitations to this conference and if Arafat abides by peace, rather than rhetoric, he can then take part in this conference.
Last Sunday, the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon asked the US to organize a conference on the Middle East with a Palestinian participation but without the attendance of Yasser Arafat whom he does not consider as a partner.
