Al-Qaida claimed responsibility for Jarba explosion

A group affiliating to al-Qaeda network led by Osama Bin Laden claimed responsibility for the explosion which took place last Thursday in the Tunisian island of Jarba and claimed the lives of 16 persons, according to several Arab sources on Tuesday.

Meantime, the German authorities on Tuesday said it released one person after he was arrested of being suspected of having links to the executors of the explosion.

The London based al- Quds al-Arabi daily that a statement sent by the "Qaida" to al-Quds al-Arabi said that this "martyrdom" operation came in retaliation to the Israeli crimes against the Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people in the West Bank and Gaza. The paper added that the statement claimed that one member of the "Islamic army to liberate holy shrines" responsible for the attack.

The paper quoted the statement as saying that the "Brave hero Nizar Muhammad Nawar, better known as Seif Eddine al-Tounisi carried out the operation, assigned by the leadership of the Islamic army for liberating the holy shrine, by his own in order to give the nation a unique example of one man who carried out an operation outside the Palestinian territories and against the Jews.

Meantime, the London- based al-Hayat daily said that its office in Islam Abad received a similar statement, adding that the statement was written on a paper carrying the name of the Qaida of Jihad which indicates the link between it and the Qaida organization.

Al-Hayat added that the statement was enclosed by the will of the executor of the operation dated July 5, 2000.

In Germany, the federal public court in Karlsrohi said that the man who was arrested and then released on Tuesday because of the lack of a decisive evidence, after he was arrested at a request from the Tunisian side at the pretext he had a telephone call with the truck driver suspected to be responsible for attacking the Synagogue in Jarba.

A Tunisian official source reported that "investigations will continue in all possible directions." The authorities explained that the identity of the truck driver was revealed. The driver whose death was declared used to live with his family in Leone ( southern east France ). Yet his identity was not disclosed.
