On Powell's visit to Syria, Lebanon
Regional-USA, Politics, 4/16/2002
The BBC correspondent in occupied Jerusalem said that the US secretary of state Collin Powell did not schedule, in advance his visit to Damascus and Beirut he held on Monday, rather he did so at the persistence of the government of Israel who wants Powell to convey to each of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and to the Lebanese government Israel's views concerning the implications and the continued attacks of the Hizbullah party at the Israeli military positions between Israel and Lebanon.
The correspondent added that Hizbullah intends to open a new front on the northern border to support the Palestinian front and that Israel can not stay patient and maintain self control, rather will launch a war against Syria and Lebanon, being responsible for the Hizbullah party.
He added, therefore, Powell will try to convince both Syria and Lebanon to control Hizbullah as Israel wants, which means that Powell's mission falls in the course of the Israeli efforts to prevent the eruption of a second front and that it does not want such front to be opened at the meantime, because Israel is drowned in the Palestinian swamp in the West Bank.
