Number of Jewish immigrants to Israel decreased by 30%

The year 2001 witnessed a decrease of 30% in the number of Jews immigrants to Israel from 60,000 in 2000 to 43,500 in 2001 because of the security deterioration in the region.
This decrease was observed in spite of the increase in the Jews migrating from Argentina (1367 in 2001 against 1053 in the previous year) and from Ethiopia (3273 in 2001 against 2301 in 2000).
The basic decrease is in the number of immigrants from Russia and other countries of the former Soviet Union to 23,500 immigrants in 2001 against 51,000 in the year 2000.
