Lebanon-Iran, Politics, 4/13/2002
Lebanese President Emil Lahoud on Friday received the Iranian foreign minister Kamal Kharazi who conveyed to him a verbal message from the Iranian President Muhammad Khatami dealing with Iran's position regarding current developments.
During the meeting, the two sides reviewed developments in light of the Israeli aggressions against the Palestinians which came following the end of the recent Arab summit, the taken decisions and the reconciliation acts.
Kharazi said following the meeting that the analysis of the situation given by the Lebanese President was identical with the Iranian ones. He expressed hope that the state of inter- Arab solidarity will serve the Palestinian question so as pressures will be increased on Israel and its supporters to halt acts of terrorism against the Palestinians. Kharazi held Israel responsible for the escalation of tension on the Lebanese borders with Israel, stressing that the Lebanese national resistance in the other parts of the Lebanese occupied territories is a legitimate right for Lebanon.
In a statement he made following his meeting with the Lebanese foreign minister Mahmoud Hamoud in Beirut on Friday, the Iranian foreign minister said that "in order to attain what it wants, Israel will start provocation. Eventually it is wise like to maintain self- control towards these Israeli provocation."
Kharazi questioned why Israel does not give up its brutal actions. Why it is still destroying the Palestinian villages and cities, he asked. He added: " I see that the US policy in this regard is not a clear and frank one. Should the US pursues a clear policy towards Israel, it would be easy to oblige it to stop its aggressions and brutal acts and should the US wants actually to abide Israel by this matter it would have permitted the UN security council under article 7 of the UN charter to issue a resolution that obliging Israel to stop its aggressions." The Iranian minister said that the Palestinian people have only to proceed forward.
In a similar statement, the Hamoud said that the talks he had held with his Iranian peer dealt with current developments in the occupied Palestinian territories, the situation in south Lebanon and the Israeli threats as well as bilateral relations.
