Jordan postpones massive demonstration in support of Palestinians
Jordan-Palestine, Politics, 4/13/2002

The Muslim Brothers groups in Jordan postponed the massive demonstration which was due Friday to head for the Israeli embassy in Amman until later time because of the government measures announced to oppress this demonstrations.

In a statement issued on Friday in Amman to this effect, the group said that the government since the early hours of Friday morning militarized the city of Amman and all Jordanian provinces and prevented hundreds of thousands of citizens from having access to areas close to the Israeli embassy and also stationed hundreds of check points on the main and branch roads and also arrested hundreds of Jordanians who came to participate in this demonstration.

The groups added in its statement that based on its care and in coordination with the party, trade union, peoples, and independent political figures, the demonstration was postponed but other activities like sits in and festivals will continue.

In its statement, the group condemned this measure by the Jordanian government and described it as oppressive and has converted Amman into a big prison in which the citizens were prevented from practicing their natural role. The group stressed continue persistence to continue demand for closing the Israeli embassy in Amman and severing all relations with Israel and also suspending all forms of normalization with Israel.

The statement strongly condemned "the US and its secretary of state Colin Powell and all those who conspire against the Palestinian question."
