Moroccan ngos confer with UN executives on situation of people sequestered in Tindouf
Morocco, Politics, 4/12/2002
Delegates of several Moroccan ngos, who are attending the ongoing 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Commission in Geneva, met in Geneva Monday and Tuesday several United nations' executives.
The delegates who are, in their majority, survivors of the Tindouf camps (stronghold of the Polisario in south-western Algeria), briefed their interlocutors, including the UN special rapporteur on torture, Theo Van Boven, and chairman of the UN group for struggle against arbitrary detention, Louis Joinet, on the tragic situation of the Moroccans forcibly detained in these camps and on the human rights violation committed by the polisario gang.
The camps survivors showed the UN executives the scars of torture their bodies still bear. The UN special rapporteur on torture, Theo Van Boven, told them he "officially" took note of their request to set in motion the relevant UN mechanisms to shed light on the torture and human rights violations practiced by the Polisario, while chairman of the UN group for struggle against arbitrary detention, Louis Joinet, promised to send a delegation from his group to investigate the conditions prevailing in these camps.
The delegates of the Moroccan ngos held similar meetings with newsmen, several international and regional ngos, including Amnesty International and the World Organization against Torture, and governmental delegations to the commission's 58th session.
The delegates were representing the committee for Sahrawi families reunion (COREFASA), the Association of the Parents of Sahraoui Victims of Repression in the Tindouf Camps (PASVERTI), Al Massira Association for the defense of the rights of Moroccan prisoners and sequestered persons in the Tindouf camps and the Association of the Sahrawi tribune for unity and fraternity (ASTRUFA).
