Calls in Syria to boycott American goods
Syria-Palestine, Politics, 4/12/2002

Hundreds of youth of the Syrian Democratic Youths federation ( Communists ) on Thursday in Damascus burnt large number of American made cigarette packets in denunciation of the American support for Israel and in solidarity with the Palestinians.

The demonstrators who also included representatives for the Palestinian groups chanted slogans condemning the Israeli crimes and denouncing the tour made by the US secretary of state to the region.

Under the title " boycott the American and Zionist goods" because every US dollar you pay the Americans is a bullet in a chest of the Palestinians.," the demonstrators circulated a list including the names of 32 American companies selling its products in Syria. The demonstrators also called on the Arab governments to abide by the rules of the Arab boycott of Israel and to sever all relations with Israel and then they started to burn huge amounts of the American goods. They were cigarette packets, T shirts, canned food, batteries, washing powder and children nutrition products.

On the other hand, a sit in by Palestinian children was observed in front of the premises of UNICEF in Damascus who later headed for the headquarters of the UN and handed a message addressed to the UN chief Kofi Annan calling for "immediate halting of the Israeli invasion."
