US continues to block effective use of international law to expell Israel from Palestinian areas
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 4/12/2002

The UN Security Council on Thursday at dawn called on Israel to immediately withdraw from the Palestinian cities it had recently occupied.

The Russian ambassador to the UN Sergy Lavrov, whose country assumes the current rotating presidency of the council said that the UN Security Council has stressed support for the statement released by Madrid meeting which called on Israel to immediately pull out from the Palestinian territories it had occupied.

Diplomatic sources at the UN Security Council said that at the request of the US, one paragraph was omitted from the statement of the UN SecurityCouncil after the end of the meeting. This paragraph indicates the great concern of the council towards the escalated crisis in the occupied Palestinian territories. The US also omitted from the statement a call on Israel to completely abide by the International Humanitarian Law.

To this effect, the assistant for the US representative at the UN has warned the council that the US will use the veto if the statements will be debated to vote on while including the two said paragraphs.

The US continues to use and threatens its veto power at the Security Council to block the use of peacefull measures, such as economic sanctions, to expell the Israeli ocupation forces from Palestinian areas.

The US has said it opposes compelling Israel to withdraw from the latest incursion into Palestinan occupied territories by using effective UN Security Council resolutions that would force sanctions on Israel, and it the US opposes resolutions that would bring Israel to observe the Geneva Convention. The US is also opposed to using force to compell Israel to exit its occupation, as would happen by passing resolutions under Article 7 of the United Nations charter.
