Egypt harnesses all powers to serve Palestinian cause
Egypt-Palestine, Religion, 4/11/2002
Egypt's Pope Shenouda, Patriarch of Alexandria and Saint Mark Diocese holds late Thursday popular conference at the Cathedral premises in Abbasseya in solidarity with Palestinian people in face of Israeli aggressions.
Al-Azhar Grand Imam Mohamed Sayed Tantawi and a group of political and religious officialls will participate in the conference.
On the other hand, a group of Egyptian Christians Wednesday slammed what they termed as the Vatican's modest stance towards the Israeli attack on the Palestinian people.
They urged Pope John Paul II to step in strongly to stop the Israeli government from continuing assaults on the Nativity Church in Bethlehem.
"We condemn the savage aggression on the Palestinian lands and on the Nativity Church. We call on the Pope of Vatican to use his influence as the head of a religious state and the representative of the biggest Christian sect in the world to pressure Israel into stopping sacrilege of holy sites," they said in a note addressed to the ambassador of the Holy see in Cairo.
