Mubarak receives Powell
Egypt-USA, Politics, 4/9/2002

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Tuesday received visiting U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and his accompanying delegation, who arrived earlier in the day on a brief visit to Egypt. Attending the meeting were Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher, Minister of Defence Field Marshal Mohammed Hussein Tantawi and Presidential Political Advisor Osama al-Baz. The visit comes as part of a tour of the region within the U.S. efforts to stop the deteriorating situation in the occupied territories.

From the American side, attending the meeting were U.S. Ambassador in Cairo David Welch and members of Powell's accompanying delegation including Assistant Secretary of State for the Middle East Affairs William Burns and State Department Spokesman Richard Boucher.

The talks come as part of the intensive contacts by President Mubarak at the interantional level to help put an end to the Israeli killing and destruction operations against the Palestinains.

Also the talks are aimed at ending the Israeli siege of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat in his headquarters in Ramallah.
