European union calls Algeria to release Moroccan prisoners
Morocco-European Union, Politics, 4/9/2002

The European Union (EU) on Monday called Algeria to release the Moroccan prisoners detained in the camps of Tindouf (south-western Algeria).

The call was made by the delegate of Spain, which is currently chairing the EU council, at the ongoing 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Commission.

"The European Union calls Algeria to immediately release all prisoners of war and urges all parties concerned to back international efforts made in this connection," said the delegate, who was also speaking on behalf of EU, of central and Eastern Europe and of Associate members of the EU (Cyprus and Malta).

Some 1362 Moroccans are detained in Tindouf, some of them for more than 20 years, in defiance of all human rights principles.
