Maher calls on civilized world to face up to Sharon's aggressive policy
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 4/9/2002

The speech delivered Monday by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon before the Knesset is a conclusive evidence of his aggressiveness and his belligerent policies. The situation in the Palestinian territories has become very painful, Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher said in statements to reporters.

Maher voiced his surprise that "Israel's heinous crimes against the Palestinian people go unheeded," saying that if one politician in any other country committed one tenth of Sharon's crimes, the whole world would have stood against him.

Maher called on the civilized world, which calls for democracy, human rights and freedom, to be brave enough and face up to the Israeli aggression.

Sharon is defying the US, Maher said, noting that Washington urged the Israeli Premier to halt his aggression and withdraw from the occupied Palestinian territories, but he refused.

Addressing the US, Maher asked "Where is your response to this?'

On Secretary of State Colin Powell's lingering over visiting the region and whether this was aimed to give Israel time to carry out its plan, Maher said "I do not think this is the US intention...But I think they want to give Sharon a chance to halt his aggression before Powell's arrival".

"If Sharon does not understand and respond to the international law and logic, and if he does not understand the interests of Israel, nations in the region, and the calls by his closest friends, I think his position will be hopeless and he will put himself in the same position of politicians who commit war crimes, and this is something which I do not think the world will accept," he said.

On means of providing the assistance ordered by President Hosni Mubarak to the Palestinians, Maher said the Red Crescent will do the job.
