Two Israeli soldiers killed, violent fighting in Jenin camp, Nablus
Palestine-Israel, Military, 4/9/2002

The Palestinian fighters and the Israeli forces on Monday had bloody and violent fightings in the cities of Jenin and Nablus in the West Bank.

Medical sources in Jenin said that between 100 to 200 Palestinians were killed in violent battles since the deployment of the Israeli army the camp which adjoins the city last Wednesday.

On Monday afternoon, the Israeli radio said that two Israeli soldiers were killed in the fighting in Jenin on Monday morning. A spokesman for the Israeli army said that two soldiers were killed and a third was strongly wounded by the bullets of the Palestinians on Monday in the camp.

In a statement, the Israeli military spokesman said that Sergeant Matania Robinson ( 21 year old) and another soldier whose name was not disclosed were killed on Monday morning by the bullets of the Palestinians and a third was strongly wounded in the same sector.

Palestinian fighters inside the camp said they killed the two soldiers during clashes by hands and that their weapons were confiscated.

Meantime, news reports from the battle field said that the Israeli helicopters opened its fires and missiles at groups of armed Palestinians who are resisting the Israeli army in the Palestinian refugee camp in Jenin. One of hospitals director Muhammad Abu Ghali said that more than 100 persons were killed in the five past days while hundreds are reported to be wounded. Such news could not be confirmed because the Israeli army did not permit pressmen nor ambulances from getting into the camp. The Israeli army considered this area as an enclosed military zone, the same they did in all parts of the west bank during the attack.

Member of the Palestinian legislative council Jamal Shaati who lives in the camp said that the Israeli helicopters fired more than 30 missiles during night time as the time when the army, through loudspeakers asked the gunmen to surrender.

Shaati added that the Israeli forces are existed in vast areas of the camp, however, a group of gunmen who do not want to surrender are still controlling small areas. He added that most of those Palestinian wear explosive belts and want to blow off themselves if the Israeli soldiers will approach them.

Earlier, the Israeli radio said that some 200 Palestinians dropped their guns following violent fighting in jenin camp in the West Bank. A mater which was denied by a Palestinian security officials. The Palestinian intelligence official in Nablus Talal Dweikat said "the news on the surrender of the Palestinian fighters is null and rather part of the psychological war against the Palestinian fighters in other areas."

Israeli military sources announced that more than 100 Palestinian fighters who were challenging the Israeli forces in Nablus to the north of the West Bank surrendered on Monday and dropped their weapons in al-Qasaba ( the old town in Nablus).

Dweikat added there is an air bombardment by planes and an artillery bombardment. The Israelis have demolished the houses and there is a great pressure on the city of Jenin and we do expect massacres to take place in the coming hours because the Palestinians refuse to surrender."

He said that more than 500 Israeli armed vehicles are built up in the city of Nablus and "the Israeli did not make such a build up even during the October war of ( 1973).. It is a new holocaust. However, if they kill half of the Palestinians the other half will continue to fight." He said that the Israeli army incurred in al-Qasaba quarters in Nablus and it was said that the Palestinian gunmen who are fortified in the area vowed to fight " until death."
