King Mohammed receives foreign ministers of Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone
Morocco-Regional, Politics, 4/8/2002

Morocco's King Mohammed VI received on Monday at the royal palace in Agadir the foreign ministers of Guinea, Liberia, and sierra Leone, respectively Ms Camara Hadja Mahawa Bangoura, Monie R.Captan, and Ramadan Dumbuya.

The three officials of the Mano River Union member countries informed the sovereign on the implementation of the decisions made by their countries' heads of state during the summit they held in Rabat last February 27 at the initiative of King Mohammed VI. They confirmed to the sovereign that the process to re-establish peace and security in the Mano river region is positively evolving in accordance with the commitments made in Rabat.

Various meetings were actually held according to the set work time table and their results proved promising and encouraging. King Mohammed VI lauded this evolution, which arouses the interest and encouragement of the international community, especially on the part of United Nations secretary general, Kofi Annan, and the Security Council.

The sovereign renewed his full readiness to carry on Morocco's efforts to accompany the reconciliation process started between the three brotherly countries, particularly in the perspective of holding, in Morocco, a second summit of the heads of state of the Mano River Union, in line with the decisions made in this connection last February 27.

Head of the royal office, Mohamed Rochdi Chraibi, Secretary of State for foreign affairs and cooperation, Taieb Fassi fihri, and Charg? de mission at the royal office, Fadel Benyaich, attended the royal audience.

The three foreign ministers held here on Sunday a follow-up meeting to last February's tripartite reconciliation summit.

The session examined a report by the joint committee of security on the borders and stability and peace mechanisms in the sub-region of the Mano river. The three countries set up in 1970 the Mano River Union to improve trade relations in the area. The endeavor was however paralyzed due to conflicts and crises between the three countries. Mano River flows down from north-western Liberia, at the border with Guinea, runs along Sierra Leone's borders and flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
