Arab group at the UN pressures for releasing a new UN resolution
Regional-Palestine, Politics, 4/5/2002

The Palestinian representative at the UN announced on Thursday that he will continue efforts so as the UN Security Council will issue a resolution enhancing pressure on Israel, despite the announcement that the US secretary of state Colin Powell will start a tour on the region next week.

Naser al-Qidwa said so far the draft resolution proposed by Syria, in the name of the Arab group, is still on the table. He added that further consultations have to be made.

Al-Qidwa added that the text of the Syrian proposal calls for immediate implementation for all items of UN resolution 1402 adopted last Saturday, calling for immediate cease- fire and the withdrawal of the Israeli forces from the West Bank, and was discussed in a close door session for more than one hours on Wednesday evening. He said that the UN Security Council is presumed to continue its discussions to this effect.
