Al-Assad calls for actual peace, not peace on papers
Syria-USA, Politics, 4/5/2002
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Thursday stressed the need of dealing with the "essence of the conflict" in the Middle East region in order "to achieve a just and comprehensive peace on reality rather than on papers."
The Syrian News agency SANA said that President al-Assad stressed upon his meeting in Damascus with an American delegation including Senator Richard Shelby, Senator Bil Nilson and Rober Kremir that "because the US is not familiar with the reasons of the conflict and the reality of what is taking place the volume of suffering is increasing because the proposed solutions mostly impartial and do not treat the essence of the problem."
During this meeting which was attended by the Syrian foreign minister Farouk al-Shara, President al-Assad explained that" the signed peace agreements are of no value if they do not guarantee the rights of people, and not be just and also if they do not achieve peace in reality rather on papers ."
Discussions dealt with prevailing conditions in the region as well as regional and international issues.
