Arab ministerial meeting postponed until Saturday
Regional-Palestine, Politics, 4/4/2002
The secretary general of the Arab league Amre Mousa announced on Wednesday that the Arab foreign ministers will on Saturday hold an emergency meeting in Cairo in order to "hold talks" on conditions in the Palestinian territories.
The AL chief said that the participants in the meeting will discuss just one item which is the Arab Israeli conflict and the grave developments in the occupied Arab territories "as a result of the Israeli barbarism and implementation of the recent Beirut's Arab summit."
On withdrawing the Arab peace initiative which was approved by the Beirut summit, the AL chief explained that these "issues are being considered but not yet under debate now." He stressed that the Arab peace initiative stresses "the Arab position and does not mean halting resistance nor any measure to halt the aggression." Replying to what was stated by Israeli officials on the need to get rid of Arafat. Mousa said:" This is true and that it falls in the course of the Israeli behaviour. I think this Israeli attitude is a reason to convene a military trial for the Israeli officials who openly announce the intention to kill Arafat and this is a war crime."
Mousa denied the existence of inter- Arab differences stressing that that there were several Arab minister still in Kuala Lumpur, ( taking part in the OIC meeting for the foreign ministers) and could not arrive back on Wednesday Mousa.
Mousa also said that he made telephone calls with the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat and with the Russian foreign minister Igor Ivanov and several Arab foreign ministers.
Earlier on Wednesday, Palestine representative at the Arab League Muhammad Sbeih said that the Arab foreign ministers will meet today ( Thursday ) to follow up the "grave and deteriorated " conditions in the Palestinian territories.
