Majority parties statement of support to the Palestinians
Morocco-Palestine, Politics, 4/3/2002

Moroccan political parties of the majority said in a communique released at the end of "a meeting of the parties to examine the painful events in the Palestinian territories, following the barbarous aggression conducted by the Israeli forces, the leaders of the parties represented in the government voiced pride at the initiatives taken by King Mohammed VI to support the Palestinian people, urging Arab and Islamic states to use all pressure means to put an end to Israeli aggressions and impose the implementation of international legality resolutions."

The parties also voice the Moroccan people's disappointment over the U.S. attitude which was a sponsor of the peace process but now turned into a supporter of (Israeli prime minister) Sharon's aggression plan. The parties called Moroccans to massively participate in the demo slated for this April 7 to express the firm backing of the Moroccan King, government and people to the fair cause of the Palestinian people.

On Tuesday, parties gathered in the Democratic Koutla (Arabic name for bloc) and three opposition parties gathered in a bloc named "Wifaq," separately called on Spain's ambassador in Morocco, Fernando Arias Salgado, and handed him letters to Spanish Premier Jose Maria Aznar, whose country is currently chairing the European Union, calling for the Union's intervention to put an end to Israeli military operation in the Palestinian territories, enforce the UN security Council resolutions and guarantee the personal safety of Palestinian president Yasser Arafat.

The representatives of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), the Istiqlal Party (PI), the Party for Progress and Socialism (PPS) and the Organization for Democratic and Popular Action (OADP) voiced deep worry at the serious situation prevailing in the Palestinian territories and explained these parties stand on the serious juncture the Palestinian cause is going through.

The EU president was also urged by Moroccan political parties to "exert efforts to stop the massacres perpetrated by the Israeli army in the Palestinian autonomous territories." The Constitutional Union (UC), the Popular Movement (MP) and the National Democrat Party (PND) also asked Spain to endeavor to guarantee the security of President Arafat and lift the unfair siege imposed on him.
