Algeria, Local, 4/3/2002

Some 21 Algerian military men were killed by an armed group in Molai al-Arabi in Sida area, 420 Km to the southern west of the capital Algiers, according to an Algerian official source on Tuesday.

The source explained that the armed group implanted an ambush for the military men while they were in a mopping up operation in a mountainous area. This is, however, the bloodiest attack to be carried out this year by an armed group since the beginning of the current year in Algeria. The papers added that a 25 old demonstrator was killed in confrontation with the armed men in Tefzirbit village, 40 Km to the north of Teizi Ozo. The same sources indicated that several demonstrators were wounded and that many of them are in a critical health condition.

Therefore number of killed persons tolled 7 in the clashes between the demonstrators and the security forces in al-Qabael district since the beginning of the clashes on March 12 this year.
