Islamic countries call on UN to provide protections for Palestinians
Palestine-International, Politics, 4/2/2002

The Islamic countries participating in the conference of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) in Kuala Lumpur, yesterday called on the United Nations to provide an international protection for the Palestinians.

They said that the Israel aggression on the Palestinians will drag the region into an-all out war, accusing Israel of violating international norms and practising state terrorism.

OIC Foreign Ministers started their meeting in the Malaysian capital Monday.

'The Foreign Ministers representing around 50 states discussed the problem of "terrorism" at world level," the BBC television station reported yesterday.

"They also reviewed the latest international developments since September 11 assaults against the U.S," the station added.

"The ministers also dwelt on the recent Israeli military operations against the Palestinians and the Palestinian Authority," the station said.

Addressing the inaugural session, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad condemned all forms of terrorism.

He also stressed the necessity of defining "terrorism".

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad slammed the United States on Monday for exercising a "double standard" in its war on terrorism by supporting "terrorism" carried out by Israel against the Palestinians.

Mahathir said that while the US is doing the right thing by getting the world to join forces against terrorism, "unfortunately, the US has supported the action by the Israeli government, which also amounts to terrorism.

"It is difficult for the world to unite against terrorism when there is an ambiguity or a double standard," he said.

He was quoted by Kyodo as saying "the Israelis believe that by terrorizing the terrorists they can stop the carnage."

The suicide bombers consider themselves already dead and are on the way to Heaven. They are not likely to be deterred by the threat of death."

He called on Israelis to come to their senses and opt for de-escalation of terror rather than escalating it.

"If the Israelis won't, then the world must forcibly stop them. If we are serious about terrorists, then we must stop both the Palestinians and the Israelis from mutual massacre," he said.

Mahathir called for all Muslims to fight terrorism and to prove to the world that terrorism is not the way of Islam.
